Ages of Lulu, then, has many parallels to Juliette in the sense that it has loose fairy tale elements and follows a woman’s improbably sexual journey. An artfully conceived and nicely shot piece of late night erotica, but less impressive in the cold light of day. What The Ages Of Lulu lacks is the camp, kitsch comedy that makes Luna's subsequent films such fun, and Lulu herself isn't deep enough to sustain the film's psychological demands. Bigas Luna preceded 1992s Jamn Jamn with a serving of Spanish sauce that proves more spicy (the BBFC wielded its scissors fairly. So too will fans of threesomes, foursomes, sex with transvestites, masturbation and very close shaves. It's lovingly filmed by Luna, and gentlemen who relish the shadowy outline of a lacy thigh will find themselves amply rewarded. Lulu leaves to pursue her own and rather awkward passion for gay men, but her nocturnal missions eventually lead to disaster. But their sexual exploration grows increasingly extreme, culminating in a blindfold encounter between Lulu and her brother. At first their life together is a festival of carnal delight.
